We have owned and bred German shepherd dogs for the past 17 years. It does not sound like a lot of time but dog breeding in Iceland has gone many miraculous steps in these years. There was no import of dogs allowed until 1990. There existed a few German shepherds, but they where all smuggled into the country at their owners risk.
Because of the short supply of purebred dogs, inbreeding had been very strong since 1960. Thanks to the quarantine opening in 1990 we have had imports of new purebreds into our bloodline (which desperately needed it, and still does).
We (Kennel Gunnarsholt) have the highest import frequency of GSD breeders in Iceland, and have had it as our motto to produce litters that we could be proud of anywhere in the world.
To import a dog to Iceland is not an easy task. Dog imports fall into the same legal category as livestock, and costs around 3000 euros just the qurantine 4 weeks.
Our imports in total have been since 1994: Gildewangen's Joop, Xandra vom Laacher-Haus, Gildewangen's Aramis,Fatini's Zyper (which we didn't import but received shortly after he came to Iceland).Gildewangen´s viktor, Gildewangen´s Xola,And these dogs we imported with kennel Óðalsdreka: Gildewangen´s Zello, Gildewangen´s Ramita, Gildewangen´s Ramboline, Dux vom Marbeck and Gildewangen´s Istan.
It has been an ongoing work for fans of the GSD breed to inform others that the purebred GSD is nothing like the old stock of GSD's (who unfortunately is still being bred here in Iceland). There has been big success and big disappointments in this (the media loves when a GSD does something wrong, whether its purebred or not).
The arrival of Gildewangen's Aramis from Leif and Hilde in Norway did great things for the breed, seeing pictures of this infamous breed in newspapers (as he won title after a title) made people look at the breed in a more neutral way and in the and as a good pet for dog loving families. (Aramis was well known for his extremely stoic outlook of life)
We originally (around 1992) talked to Judge/breeder Marianne Furst-Danielson from Sweden about pointers about Scandinavian breeders of GSD's and she gave us four kennel names. One of the name was Kennel Gildewangen's which we opted to deal with, and have absolutely no regrets about. Leif and Hilde Wangberg of kennel Gildewangen's have been a great help for us and a huge source of knowledge as we have built up the breed here in Iceland. As for being good friends from the beginning.
Leif, Hilde and family. Thank you for everything.
